North Shore Oahu

Surfs up, this is where the surfing action is on Sunset Beach, Pipeline and Wiamea. In the winter months the surf is only for experienced surfers and swimmers. Ten to thirty foot surf is very common November through March. If your visit takes you to the Oahu during the winter months I advise you to be a spectator on the beach, leave the surfing to the experts.

Here it is, World Famous Waimea Bay the hot spot for tourists from around the world. Arrive early there is minimal parking and it fills up fast. This is a great place for a picnic lunch. A few seasons of Bay Watch were filmed on this beach. If you close your eyes, you can just see Mitch and the Tomato’s(Bay Watch Girls) running across the sand.

Not far from Waimea is where the crash scenes from Lost were filmed. I came across the set driving to the tip of the island. I was shocked to see a 737 jet liner and debris spread around the beach. At the time I didn’t know it was a television set and thought a plane had crashed on the beach. Unfortunately I did not have my camera, never forget the camera you never know what you will see.

The North Shore is home of the town of Haleiwa, it’s an old fishing village that has some nice shops and eating establishments it’s a great place to break for lunch or dinner. The town is just off of Kamehameha Highway. Watch the pro surfers in the morning then have lunch in Haleiwa. Don’t forget to try some shaved ice with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream in the bottom of the cone.
